Blog comment spammers … help!

Hey, I need some advice/help, now I’ve been writing on this blog for a few years, I don’t blog a great deal in comparison to many of my peers and my blog doesn’t get a massive number of hits, BUT I seem to get a fair share of comment spammers!!

I have image verification on the comments and I have put an Akismet API key into the Geekswithblogs settings, but I still get a bunch of spam comments.

They could almost be real, until you see the link going off to some dating site or casino crap.

What does everyone do?? Delete them every time?? Moderate comments??

I would rather not moderate comments if possible, but is that the only way to stop the crap??

Thx

Gravatar I have the same issue and the I've found I HAVE to Moderate. The automated/systemic comment validation tools don't work when the spammers just outsource...

sigh...

So yeah, I wrote up a quick "comment policy" (which says in short it's MY blog and I'll delete any comment for any reason) and also moderate them.

Yep, it bytes having to moderate them, but it's worse NOT...

Gravatar Hey Greg, thx for your info...

I feared that may be the answer. Although glad the first comment didn't link off to some casino!!! :)

Gravatar Unfortunately, if the spam is making it past the image verification and the Akismet filters, the only option left is to moderate (either automatically or manually). I manually moderate, which is to say that I don't have moderation turned on but review my comments as they come in (it helps that GWB emails to let you know there is a new comment) and delete any that are spam. Yes, that is probably more work on my end but I haven't run into too many issues with it (yet).

Gravatar Thx Scott, that may well be the only solution for me.

Gravatar I am reviewing my blogroll and wonder your blog feed has been inactive for a few months or moved somewhere else?

Cheers.
